How to build relationships with your neighbors...

Do you know...

Ms. Genevieve has lived in Ybor Heights over 20 years.  If you ask her about her neighbors she will share with you names and something special about each of them.  How exciting to know that it is an entire street? If you ask her how she does it she'll tell you it's not 'hard'.

Ms. Genevieve is a jovial woman ready to share stories about YH neighborhood when asked.  We often wonder how she keeps up with people and events in the neighborhood since she keeps a low profile most days.  She's rarely seen however she does keep in contact by phone with the neighbors.  And since most know where she lives and that she has a plethora of information along with nearly everyone in the communities contact information, she is the 'go-to' person in this neighborhood.  "That vacant lot needs the grass cut."  Ms. Genevieve will call the owners.  That abandoned house has a "For Sale" sign but the window is broken.  "Let me contact Bill".  From overgrown trees to, Code Inspectors serving warnings, she uses what seems like 'super spy' skills to remain abreast of all news in the community.

Not only is Ms. Genevieve the Crime Watch President for our Ybor Heights, she's a Mom, Wife, Grandmother, friend and neighbor that cares.  While she remains connected with neighbors steps away by phone, we may all learn something special about good citizenship from her.  If we all make it a point to communicate with our neighbors at some point during the week and build relationships, before long it will not take much for us to be equally as 'jovial' about living in a community that we may take pride in just as Ms. Genevieve has modeled for us.

Here are a few steps to build relationships in your Community:

  • Join Ybor Heights Neighborhood Association.  We meet-up once per month. (Social and Informative)
  • Get out of your house and take a walk to Grocery/Bodega, Walgreens/ Dollar Store, Bank or Sweetbay.
  • (Be sure to say "Hello" to your neighbors on the way and back.)
  • Share gardening/lawn care stories with your neighbors
  • Walk, Work Out, or Play at Ragan Park
  • Have an event/party or BBQ and invite your neighbors
  • Bake cookies and share them with your neighbors

Share your favorite tips or ideas in the comments section. We love to hear from you neighbors and friends.

Together we Win.
